Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa, which is better to visit?

If you only have one day, Polonnaruwa is generally easier to explore and more visually impressive for a quick visit. The ruins are much more compact and remarkably well preserved. Anuradhapura is older and highly spiritual with massive stupas, but it is spread out over a much larger area.
