The site looks huge. Is cycling the best way to get around the ancient city.

Renting a bicycle is absolutely the best way to explore the Polonnaruwa ancient city. The archaeological site is vast, flat, and connected by shaded dirt paths.

If you do cycle, start your tour very early in the morning. The ruins have very little shade, and the midday sun makes cycling quite exhausting.

For Anuradhapura, renting a bicycle is also great, but the site is much more spread out than Polonnaruwa. If you are not very fit, hiring a tuk tuk driver for the day is a better option.
