Everything seems to close down on full moon days. What exactly is this religious holiday.

Accepted Answer

Poya days occur on every full moon and are significant Buddhist public holidays in Sri Lanka. All government offices, banks, and many shops close. Importantly for tourists, the sale of alcohol and meat is strictly prohibited anywhere on the island on Poya days.
