I'm a digital nomad and will be working remotely for a few days while traveling through Ella and the South Coast. I need to take Zoom calls.

Which SIM card has the best coverage? I hear Dialog is the best, but some say Mobitel is faster. Can I buy a SIM at the airport?

For a digital nomad, this is crucial. You can (and should) buy your SIM in the arrival hall at Colombo Airport immediately after customs—both counters are open 24/7.

The Winner: Generally, Dialog has the widest coverage, especially in rural areas like Ella or during the train ride.

The Runner Up: Mobitel is often faster in cities, but can be spotty in the hills.

The Strategy: If your work depends on it, I highly recommend buying both. Data is incredibly cheap in Sri Lanka (you can get 50GB for a few dollars). Put one in your phone and one in a portable hotspot/spare phone. If one network goes down in a remote hotel, the other usually works.

Note on Hotel Wi-Fi: Do not rely on hotel Wi-Fi for Zoom calls. It is often shared and slow. Always use your own 4G hotspot.
