You can pay the 25 USD equivalent in Sri Lankan Rupees, which is usually around 7500 LKR depending on the daily exchange rate. Bring cash just in case the card machines are offline.

You absolutely must buy your tickets from the Archaeological Museum first before heading to the ruins. The guards at the main gate will not sell you a ticket and will send you back.
