Should I buy Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR) before I leave home?
I'm flying out next week and went to my local bank in London/Berlin to order some Sri Lankan Rupees, but they said they don't stock them.
Should I keep looking for a currency exchange at home, or just bring USD/EUR/GBP? Also, are ATMs reliable outside of Colombo? I don't want to be stuck without cash in the mountains.

You actually cannot buy LKR outside of Sri Lanka. It is a "closed currency," meaning you can only obtain it once you land.
What to bring: Bring fresh, crisp notes of USD, EUR, or GBP (no tears or markings). You can exchange these at the counters in the airport arrival hall—the rates there are surprisingly competitive and often better than hotels.
The "Jewelry Shop" Trick: In towns like Negombo or Galle, gold jewelry shops often function as licensed money changers and sometimes offer better rates than banks.
ATMs: ATMs are everywhere, even in small towns like Ella. Look for Commercial Bank, Hatton National Bank (HNB), or Sampath Bank. They accept almost all foreign Visa/Mastercards. Just remember to inform your home bank you are traveling so they don't block your card!
