Where do the villagers buy their spices and tea. We want an authentic shopping experience.

To avoid the overpriced tourist spice gardens, head to the Bandarawela local market. It is just a short bus or train ride from Ella and is a massive, bustling hub where locals buy all their fresh produce.

The Wednesday market in Ella town is also good for a quick visit, but Bandarawela offers a much larger and more authentic, non touristy shopping environment.

You will find authentic, fragrant roasted curry powders, fresh cinnamon, and locally grown tea being sold by weight at normal, local prices. It is a fantastic, chaotic sensory experience.
