If the bay is packed, what nearby secluded beaches or inland spots can we retreat to.

When Hiriketiya bay gets packed with surfers during peak season, the best escape is to walk fifteen minutes over the western headland to Dickwella beach. It is a massive, wide stretch of golden sand that remains almost entirely empty year round.

You can also rent a scooter and drive ten minutes east to Nilwella or Blue Beach Island. These are pristine, hidden coastal coves where you will likely be the only foreigner on the sand.

For an inland escape, take a tuk tuk to the Wewurukannala Viharaya temple in Dikwella. It is a fascinating cultural site with a towering Buddha statue, offering a quiet, spiritual break from the busy beach bars.
