Can we really not buy beer on Full Moon days? (Poya Days)

We are planning a party for my friend's birthday on the 14th, but I just realized it's a "Poya Day" (Full Moon).

I read that alcohol sales are banned. Does this apply to tourists in hotels too? Will the bars be closed? We don't want to be disrespectful, but we were hoping for cocktails by the pool.

Yes, the "Poya" rule is strict! Every full moon is a religious holiday in Sri Lanka.

The Law: No bars, liquor stores, or supermarkets can sell alcohol on Poya days. This includes hotel bars. You will often see the bar fridge covered with a white sheet or tape.

The Loophole: It is legal to consume alcohol in the privacy of your own room. If you buy your wine or beer the day before Poya, you can drink it on your balcony or in your room. Some lenient hotels might let you drink your own supply by the pool if you are discreet and pour it into a plastic cup, but don't expect service.

Plan Ahead: Check the calendar. If a Poya day lands on your trip, stock up the day before!
