Guards at Horton Plains searched my bag and took my biscuit wrappers! Is this normal?
We arrived at the Horton Plains (World's End) entrance at 6 AM. The guards did a full bag search and made us remove all the plastic wrappers from our snacks. They put our biscuits in a paper bag and confiscated the plastic.
They also took my lighter. I felt like I was at airport security. Why are they so strict?

Yes, Horton Plains has the strictest environmental enforcement in the country, and for good reason.
The "Polythene Ban": Sambar Deer and Leopards in the park have died from eating plastic left by tourists. The guards now have a zero-tolerance policy.
What is Banned: Plastic bags, shrink-wrapped labels on water bottles (they will cut the label off), lunch sheets, and lighters/matches (to prevent forest fires).
The Hack: Before you go, transfer your snacks into Tupperware containers or a reusable lunch box. Peel the plastic labels off your water bottles at the hotel. It saves time at the gate!
Totally standard procedure for Horton Plains! It is a strict 'No Polythene Zone.' They don't just check tourists; they check us locals and school trips just as strictly. The lighter was taken because forest fires are a massive risk there, especially when the grass is dry. It feels like airport security, but honestly, it’s one of the cleanest national parks in Asia because of it. Next time, pack your snacks in a reusable Tupperware box to breeze through the checkpoint!
