Is Hiriketiya still a "chill hidden gem"? Or should we skip it?
We booked 4 nights in Hiriketiya ("Hiri") because blogs said it was a quiet paradise. Now I'm seeing Instagram stories showing the bay packed with hundreds of surfers crashing into each other.
We want a relaxed vibe, not a party zoo. Should we cancel and move?

The "Secret Hiri" days are long gone. In 2025/2026, it is arguably the trendiest (and most crowded) spot on the South Coast.
The Reality: The bay is tiny. In January (peak season), it is "surf soup." Prices for food and accommodation are also higher than neighboring towns.
The "Digital Nomad" Hub: It has become a major coworking hub, so the cafes are full of laptops.
The Alternative: If you want the "Hiri vibe" without the crush, stay in Dikwella (just 1km away, huge empty beach) or move slightly east to Tangalle (Silent Beach) for true peace. You can still visit Hiri for dinner/drinks, but sleeping elsewhere is more relaxing.
