Confused about plugs! Do I need Type D (Round) or Type G (Square)?

I'm packing my electronics and the internet says Sri Lanka uses Type D (the old Indian round pins) AND Type G (the British square pins).

Which one is it? Do I need to bring two different adapters? I'm staying in a mix of homestays and 4-star hotels.

This is the most confusing part of packing because the answer is: We use both.

The Modern Standard (Type G): New hotels and renovated buildings use the British Square Pin (Type G). If you are from the UK, you are lucky!

The Old Standard (Type D): Older guesthouses and homestays often still have the Round Pin (Type D) sockets.

The "Pen Trick": You will often see a Type G socket with a switch. If you have a European (Type C) plug, you might see locals sticking a pen into the top earth pin to "open" the bottom two holes for your plug. Do not do this unless you know what you are doing—it's unsafe.

Solution: Buy a "Universal Travel Adapter" that supports both. Alternatively, you can buy a simple cheap adapter at any local supermarket (Keells or Cargills) for about $2 USD when you arrive.
