Hostel charged me 5000 LKR for a "dirty sheet." Is this normal?

I checked out of my hostel in Mirissa today and they wouldn't return my passport until I paid a fine for a "stained sheet."

It was a tiny mark (maybe sun cream or mosquito spray). They said the sheet is "ruined." I feel like this is a way to make extra money. How do I argue this?

This has become a very common "revenue stream" for budget hostels in 2025.

The Issue: Laundry chemicals are expensive, and white sheets stain easily (red earth, turmeric curry, henna tattoos, sunscreen).

The Scam vs. Reality: If you actually spilled wine or blood, you should pay. But many hostels charge the full replacement cost for a washable spot.

Prevention:

Check-in: Inspect your sheets immediately. If you see a stain, take a photo and tell the reception before you sleep.

Tattoos: If you have a fresh tattoo or henna, sleep on your own towel.

The Argument: If they demand a crazy fee (like 5000 LKR), ask for the receipt of the sheet or offer to wash it yourself. Often, if you stand your ground and threaten a Google Review, the price drops to a reasonable "laundry fee" (500 LKR).
