Is the Kandy to Ella train running after the January rains/cyclone? Is it safe?

I saw news about "Cyclone Ditwah" and flooding in the Hill Country earlier this week. We are supposed to take the blue train to Ella tomorrow.

Is the track open? Are the roads to Nuwara Eliya safe from landslides? We are traveling with a baby and don't want to get stuck.

You are right to check, as the first two weeks of January 2026 were rough.

Train Status: The main line (Colombo-Badulla) has reopened as of yesterday, but trains are running at reduced speeds. Expect delays of 2–3 hours.

The "Black Bridge" Caution: The section between Nanu Oya and Haputale is still prone to minor earth slips. If it rains heavily on the day of your travel, the railway authority might cancel the train last minute.

Road Safety: The main roads (A5) are clear, but avoid the "shortcuts" or minor back roads suggested by Google Maps in the Nuwara Eliya district—they are still muddy and dangerous. Stick to the main carpeted roads.

Advice: Take the train, but bring extra food/water and diapers for the baby in case of a long stop on the tracks.
