I entered on the "Free Visa" (30 Days). Can I extend it online, or do I have to leave?

I'm a UK citizen and I entered under the free visa scheme. I love it here and want to stay another month.

Can I extend a free visa? And does the online portal actually work, or do I need to go to the Immigration office in Battaramulla (Colombo)?

This is the most confusing part of the 2026 rules!

Yes, you can extend: Even if your initial entry was "free," you can extend your stay.

The Cost: The extension is NOT free. You will have to pay the standard visa fee (approx $50-$100 depending on nationality) for the second month.

Online vs. Physical: You can apply online at eservices.immigration.gov.lk, but the system is currently very glitchy with foreign credit cards.

The "Battaramulla" Hack: If the website fails (which it often does), go to the Department of Immigration in Battaramulla early (8:00 AM). It takes about 3-4 hours, but you will get the stamp in your passport instantly. Wear long pants (dress code applies!).
