Got yelled at by the bus conductor for sitting in the front seat. Why?

I took a public bus today and sat in the empty front seat to get a better view (and some air).

The conductor came over, shouted "Monk! Monk!" and made me move to the back, even though no monk was there. I felt really embarrassed. What is the rule?

Don't feel too bad! this is a very common mistake for first-timers!

The Rule: The first two seats on every Sri Lankan bus are legally reserved for Clergy (Buddhist Monks, Priests).

Why you were moved: Even if the seat is empty, the conductor must keep it clear in case a monk boards. If a monk gets on and a tourist is sitting there, the bus crew can get in trouble.

The "Pregnant/Disabled" Seats: The next row is often for pregnant women or the elderly.

Safe Zone: Always head for the middle or back of the bus to avoid the "Seat of Shame" shuffle.
