How much should a King Coconut (Thambili) cost? I paid 400 LKR!
I bought a yellow King Coconut from a street vendor in Unawatuna today. He charged me 400 LKR.
Later, I saw a local buy one for 150 LKR. I don't mind paying a "tourist price," but 400 feels steep. What is the fair market rate right now?

You definitely paid the "unnegotiated tourist price."
The Real Price: As of 2026, the standard street price for a Thambili is 120 – 150 LKR in the city/villages.
The Tourist Zone Price: In beach hotspots (Unawatuna, Ella, Negombo), vendors usually ask 200 – 250 LKR. This is an acceptable markup for the location.
The Rip-off: 400+ LKR is pure gouging.
How to Negotiation: Before he cuts it open, ask "Keeyada?" (How much?). If he says 400, smile and say "Epa, 200?" (No, 200?). He will usually agree instantly. If not, walk to the next guy.
