I rented a Tuk-Tuk online. Do I need to go to Colombo for a license permit?

I booked a "self-drive tuk-tuk" for 2 weeks. I have my International Driving Permit (IDP) from home.

The rental company says I need to visit the "AAC" in Colombo to get a local endorsement. Can't I just drive with my IDP? I don't want to waste a day in Colombo offices.

You cannot skip this step. This is the one rule police love to check.

The Rule: Your International Driving Permit (IDP) is valid only if it is endorsed by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC). Without this AAC slip, your insurance is void and you are driving illegally.

The Process: You must go to the AAC office in Colombo (near Galle Face). It takes about 30 minutes. You show your IDP (must have "B" or "A" endorsement), pay a fee (around 7,000 LKR), and they give you the permit.

The "Agent" Hack: Many reputable rental companies (like TukTuk Rental) can do this for you in advance if you send them your documents 2 weeks early. They will have the license ready at the airport pickup. Ask your rental agency if they offer this "pre-arrival service." If they don't, you must go to the office yourself.
