Where is the best place to buy tea to take home? Tea Factory or Supermarket?

I want to bring back a lot of Ceylon Tea for gifts. We visited a tea factory in Nuwara Eliya and the prices in their "boutique" seemed really high ($15 for a small tin).

Is that "tourist pricing"? Can I get the same quality tea at a normal supermarket in Colombo, or is the factory stuff significantly better?

You spotted the "tourist tax"! Tea factories often markup their gift shop items significantly because of the fancy packaging and the "experience."

The Supermarket Secret: Go to any Keells, Cargills, or Arpico supermarket. Look for brands like Dilmah, Zesta, or Watawala. These are excellent, export-quality teas that locals drink, and they cost a fraction of the factory price (maybe $2–$4 per box).

When to buy at the Factory: Only buy at the factory if you want a specific rare grade like "Silver Tips" or "White Tea" which are hard to find in standard shops.

The "Lion Logo": Always look for the "Lion with the Sword" logo on the pack. This is the government certification that it is 100% Pure Ceylon Tea, not a cheap blend.
