We went to Minneriya National Park today and saw ZERO elephants. Did we get scammed?

We paid for a private jeep safari in Minneriya because we read about the "Great Gathering" of elephants. We drove around for 3 hours and saw nothing but peacocks.

Our driver didn't tell us it was empty. Is this normal for January, or were we just unlucky

I am sorry you had this experience, but this is a classic seasonal mistake.

The Reality: The "Gathering" at Minneriya happens in the Dry Season (July – Sept).

Right Now (Jan 2026): It is the Wet Season. The Minneriya tank is full, so there is no grass for them to graze on. The elephants have migrated to Hurulu Eco Park or Kaudulla where the drainage is better.

The Fix: For the rest of January/February, do not go to Minneriya. Ask your jeep driver to take you to Hurulu Eco Park. That is where the herds are right now.

Not necessarily scammed, but January is not the “Great Gathering” season at Minneriya, so a zero-elephant safari can happen. What matters is whether the operator set your expectations honestly and chose the right park for that day.

Why you might have seen zero elephants in January

1) The Great Gathering is seasonal
The big Minneriya gathering is mainly a dry-season event, typically July to October, with August and September often described as peak months.

2) Elephants move between Minneriya, Kaudulla, Wasgamuwa, and Hurulu
This area is an elephant corridor, and elephants shift parks with rainfall and water levels. During the rainy period, herds often spread out and move away from Minneriya.

3) Timing matters
Even in good months, elephants are most often seen near the tank edges in the late afternoon when they come out to feed and drink.
If your safari was earlier in the day, sightings can be harder.

So were you unlucky or misled?

Unlucky: Yes, it can genuinely be quiet in January, especially if there has been recent rain and the elephants are dispersed.

Misled: If they sold it specifically as the “Great Gathering” experience in January without explaining the seasonality, that is poor guidance.

What you should do now (practical and fair)

Ask which park has elephants today or tomorrow: Minneriya vs Kaudulla vs Hurulu is often a day-by-day call based on where herds are.

Request a make-up safari or partial refund if you were promised the Gathering experience. Keep it calm and specific:

“We booked Minneriya for elephants. In January they often move. Why did we not switch to Hurulu or Kaudulla today? Can we do a second safari at a discounted rate or get a partial refund?”

If you can switch parks tomorrow: In December to January, many local operators focus on Hurulu Eco Park more than Minneriya, depending on rains.

Quick rule for future bookings in the Cultural Triangle

Before paying, ask one question:
“Which park has the elephants this week, and will you choose Minneriya, Kaudulla, or Hurulu based on today’s sightings?
