Does the Sigiriya ticket counter accept Credit Cards in 2026? Or do I need $100 cash?
I read that the Sigiriya entry fee went up to $36 USD per person. For a family of 4, that's a lot of cash to carry.
Can we reliably pay by Card (Visa/Mastercard)? Or is the machine "always broken" like people say?

You should plan for Cash, even though Card is "officially" accepted.
The Reality: The ticket counter has card machines, but they frequently fail due to poor signal or power fluctuations in the area.
The "USD" Rule: Even though the price is quoted in USD ($36), the machine will charge you in LKR at the daily bank rate.
Expert Tip: Bring LKR Cash as a backup. There is an ATM near the main car park (Commercial Bank), but it often runs out of cash by noon due to the tourist rush. Withdraw your money in Dambulla or Kandy before you drive to the rock.
Here’s the honest answer I give guests:
Do not plan as if card will definitely work at the counter. Recent traveler reports are mixed. Some say card is accepted now, others still report cash-only days or machines not working.
The safest plan (and my recommendation)
- Use the official Central Cultural Fund (CCF) eTicket portal and pay online, then show your passport at the counter if needed.
- Note: eTickets are generally non-refundable, and CCF notes orders can be valid for a period (for example, 90 days is mentioned on their site).
Cash reality check
- You typically do not need to carry USD cash. CCF ticket info states prices are updated daily based on exchange rates and payable in LKR.
- If the fee is around USD 36 per adult, a family total can easily exceed USD 100 depending on ages and the day’s rate, so having a LKR cash backup is smart even if you plan to use card.
Sigiriya is priced in USD but you pay in LKR at the day’s exchange rate. Right now the official list shows USD 35 for Sigiriya full ticket and they publish the LKR equivalent too.
Card sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t. If you want zero stress, bring LKR cash as backup.
We paid by Visa/Mastercard at the counter, no issue.
