Hearing rumors about everyone getting sick in Hiriketiya. Is it safe to swim?
We are heading to Hiriketiya next week, but I'm seeing posts on Reddit about a "stomach bug" going around.
Is it food poisoning or the water? Should we cancel and go to Tangalle instead?

"Hiri Belly" is, unfortunately, a peak-season reality (Jan-March) when the small bay gets overwhelmed by crowds.
The Cause: It is usually a mix of two things:
1. Sewage Runoff: The infrastructure in Hiriketiya hasn't kept up with tourism. Heavy rains (like we had last week) can wash overflow into the bay.
2. Viral Spread: Crowded hostels and shared cafes spread Norovirus quickly.
Advice:
- Swimming: Avoid swimming in the "lagoon" end (where the stream enters). Swim in the middle/ocean side where the water circulates.
- Hygiene: Sanitize your hands obsessively before eating.
- Verdict: You don't need to cancel, but be "hygiene-paranoid." If you have a sensitive immune system, staying in the wider, cleaner bays of Dikwella or Tangalle is safer.
