Hello everyone! I am currently in Kandy and planning to head to Ella on Friday. I checked the official seat reservation site and everything looks completely sold out for the morning trains.

Is there a trick to getting tickets at the station or should I just give up and book a private car? I really do not want to miss the views but I also do not want to stand for seven hours with a heavy backpack. Any advice from people who have traveled this route recently would be amazing!

If you want a guaranteed seat without the 30 day advance stress, look for the Ella Odyssey or the Calypso trains. These are special tourist trains that often have seats available even a few days before. They are a bit more expensive but they stop at scenic spots like the Nine Arches Bridge for photo ops which the regular commuter trains do not do. Check the ticket counter specifically for these tourist lines.

Do not panic just yet. The online system only shows a small percentage of the total seats. You can almost always get an unreserved ticket if you show up at the Kandy station about an hour before departure. These cannot sell out. The secret is to go to the very end of the platform where the unreserved carriages pull up. If you are quick, you can snag a seat before the crowd at the center of the platform even realizes the train has arrived.

Another option if the direct Kandy to Ella line is packed is to split your journey. Take the train from Kandy to Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) first. Stay a night there to see the tea estates and then catch the morning train from Nanu Oya to Ella. The second leg is much shorter and often less crowded than the full journey from Kandy. Plus, the Nanu Oya to Ella stretch is actually the most beautiful part of the whole ride.
