Sigiriya Rock vs. Pidurangala: Can you really do both in one morning?

Hello everyone! I am planning to visit the Cultural Triangle next week and I am torn between the two big rocks in Sigiriya. Everyone says Sigiriya is a must for the history, but the photos from Pidurangala looking over at the Lion Rock are just stunning.

My question is, has anyone actually tried to do both on the same morning to beat the heat? If so, which one should I start with to get the best light for photos without getting stuck in a massive queue of tour buses? I only have one full day in the area so I want to make it count!

If you are more interested in the archaeology than the "perfect" Instagram shot, I would actually suggest the opposite. Start at Sigiriya Lion Rock exactly when the gates open at 7:00 AM. The climb is much more taxing because of the 1,200 steps, and you really want to do that before the sun gets punishing at 10:00 AM. After you explore the summit and the gardens, take a 10 minute tuk tuk to Pidurangala. It will be hotter, but the Pidurangala path has a lot more tree cover and shade for the first 80 percent of the hike compared to the exposed metal stairs of Sigiriya.

Just a heads up on the practical side for anyone doing both. Remember that the entrance to Pidurangala goes through a temple, so you must have your shoulders and knees covered for that initial section. You can bring a sarong in your bag and take it off once you pass the temple area to hike in your regular gear. Also, keep in mind the price difference. Sigiriya is around $35 USD while Pidurangala is only about 1,000 LKR ($3 USD). If your legs are tired after Sigiriya, Pidurangala is much easier on the wallet to skip, but the view of the fortress from across the valley is truly the best in Sri Lanka.

It is definitely possible to do both, but you need to be strategic. My advice is to start with Pidurangala for sunrise. You should aim to start the climb at around 5:00 AM. This gives you that iconic golden hour view of the Lion Rock while it is still cool. Once you climb down, grab a quick coconut water and head straight to the Sigiriya main gate by 7:30 AM. Most of the large tour groups from Dambulla or Kandy do not arrive until 9:00 AM, so you will still beat the worst of the crowds at the narrow spiral staircases.
