2004 tsunami - still a real concern I need to think about?

Historical. Early warning system is now excellent (sirens, SMS, radio). All coastal hotels have posted evacuation routes. Realistic risk of a major tsunami during a 3-week trip is essentially the same as an earthquake in California - non-zero but not something to plan around. Practical: at your beach hotel, glance at the evacuation sign in your room, note the high ground direction. Done. Enjoy.
^ correct. The 2004 tsunami is talked about a lot because it's a tragedy still in living memory here. It's not an ongoing risk. If you visit the tsunami museum in Peraliya it's very moving - worth doing, but not something that should change your plans.
