Where are the empty waves? Looking for quiet surf spots away from Weligama.
Hello everyone! I have been in Weligama for a week and while the waves are perfect for practice, the lineup is becoming a bit too crowded for my liking. I am looking for some "secret" or at least quieter spots for an intermediate surfer.
I have heard whispers about spots further east near Matara or some hidden bays between Hiriketiya and Tangalle. Does anyone have recommendations for places where I can paddle out without twenty other people? I am happy to rent a scooter and drive a bit further to find some peace!

If you want to escape the Weligama zoo, head over to Meddawatta (also known as Black Sands) near Matara. It is a massive beach break that can handle a lot of people without ever feeling crowded. The waves there are a bit more powerful and punchy than Weligama, so it is perfect for an intermediate rider. Plus, the local vibe is much more grounded and you will often find yourself sharing the peak with only two or three others.

If you are feeling adventurous, take your scooter even further east past Hiriketiya to Kudawella or Talalla. These bays are stunning and almost entirely empty of surfers. The waves at Talalla are quite mellow and dependent on the swell direction, but when it is on, it is pure magic. Just a tip for these quieter spots: there are no lifeguards and fewer surf schools around, so make sure you are confident in your swimming and always let someone know where you are going.
