Moving south for a month: Should I base in Ahangama or Hiriketiya?
Hello everyone! I am planning to spend all of March working remotely and surfing in the south. I am torn between Ahangama and Hiriketiya. I have heard Hiri has a better community vibe but Ahangama has more variety for intermediate surfing.
For those who have stayed in both recently, which one feels less like a tourist bubble and more like a real village? I need a place where I can walk to most cafes and the beach because I do not want to be on a scooter every single day. Also, any specific coworking spots with AC would be a huge bonus!

For coworking with AC, Ahangama actually has a slight edge in 2026. Check out Focus Hub or NETS. They are proper offices with backup power and private call booths. In Hiriketiya, you have Verse Collective, which is amazing and has a great community, but it is an open-air cafe style. It stays cool because of the breeze, but if you absolutely need a chilled AC room for a long work day, Ahangama has more of those dedicated setups. Both have great food scenes, but Ahangama feels a bit more "refined" while Hiri is all about that relaxed, tropical brunch vibe.

If walkability is your priority, Hiriketiya wins by a mile. It is a tiny horseshoe bay tucked away from the main road, so you can essentially go barefoot everywhere. Ahangama is much more spread out along the busy Matara Road, so you almost always need a scooter or a tuk tuk to get between your villa, the surf breaks, and the better restaurants. However, Ahangama definitely feels more "cool" and hip right now with its art galleries and hidden jungle bars, whereas Hiri feels like a cozy jungle hideaway.
