Snorkelling to see Turtles in April
I’m going to be in Sri Lanka from mid towards the end of April this year. Really want to go snorkeling to see some turtles, where would you recommend?

Since you’re here in April, Hikkaduwa (Turtle Beach) is your most reliable bet for a guaranteed sighting. You don't even need a boat; they swim right up to the shore near the Hikka Tranz hotel. However, it can get very crowded. For a more peaceful experience, head to Mirissa, specifically the bay near 'Turtle Bay' restaurant (just before Coconut Tree Hill). The water is usually calm in April, and you can snorkel with them in a much more natural setting without the 'zoo' vibe of Hikkaduwa.

April is the transition month! If you're here in mid-April, the South Coast (Mirissa/Hikkaduwa) still has flat, crystal-clear water. But if the south-west monsoon starts early and the sea looks choppy, head East to Trincomalee. Pigeon Island National Park is world-class for snorkeling. You'll see Green and Hawksbill turtles, and as a bonus, plenty of (harmless) Blacktip reef sharks. Just check the local weather reports when you land, if the South is rainy, go East!

Expert tip: Wherever you go, please do not feed them. In Hikkaduwa, locals sell seaweed to tourists, which actually disrupts the turtles' health and natural behavior. If you want a legit, ethical encounter, I’d recommend a morning boat snorkel in Mirissa or Polhena. Polhena is a hidden gem with shallow reefs where turtles live year-round. It’s less 'touristy' and the locals there are much more protective of the animals. Go at 7:00 AM for the best visibility!
