Hi everyone

I am planning to visit Sri Lanka this April and I have a few questions regarding the same.

  1. Is Sigiriya worth visiting in April heat?

  2. Are there any AC buses running between Ella and Mirissa?

  3. What are some of the trusted private taxi cab operators?

  4. How many nights do you recommend in Ella and Kandy?

  5. Some of the best thrift shopping or just shopping places in Mirissa or Galle or Colombo?

Apologies for so many questions. I’ll appreciate all the help.

Thanks

No need to apologize! Sri Lanka in April is amazing but hot (it’s the peak of the heat before the monsoons), so you have to plan your days around the sun. Here’s the breakdown:

1. Sigiriya in April Heat: It is absolutely worth it, but only if you are at the ticket office by 6:30 AM. Do not!! I repeat, do not!! attempt the climb after 10:00 AM. The rock radiates heat and there is zero shade.

  • Expert Tip: If you want a more "adventurous" (and cheaper) vibe, climb Pidurangala for sunrise. You get an incredible view of Sigiriya Rock as the sun comes up.

2. AC Buses (Ella to Mirissa): Direct "public" AC buses on this route are basically non-existent. The standard blue/red buses are open-window.

  • The Hack: Book a seat in a Tourist Share-Van. They are AC, much faster, and pick you up from your hostel. Check the 12Go website or ask your guesthouse in Ella the day before; they usually have a "transport board" in the lobby.

  • The "Pro" Move: Book a taxi transfer that includes a safari stop at Udawalawe on the way down. It breaks up the drive and is the best place to see elephants.

3. Trusted Taxis: Stick to these three and you won't get scammed:

  • PickMe: The local version of Uber. Use the "Intercity" option for long distances.

  • Kangaroo Cabs: The most professional "old school" operator. Great for airport runs.

  • Uber: Reliable in Colombo and Kandy, but hit-or-miss in the deep south or hills.

4. The "Sweet Spot" for Nights:

  • Kandy (1-2 Nights): It’s a bit loud and congested. See the Temple of the Tooth and the Botanical Gardens, then move on.

  • Ella (3-4 Nights): This is where you’ll want to stay longer. There’s so much hiking (Nine Arch, Little Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock) and the cafe culture is the best in the country.

5. Shopping (Colombo & Galle):

  • Colombo: Go to Barefoot for high-quality handlooms and Odel for brands. For thrifting/sustainable fashion, check out The Thrift Ship or House of Lonali.

  • Galle Fort: Skip the "tourist traps" and look for Stick No Bills (vintage posters) and the tiny linen boutiques tucked in the side streets. It’s pricier but the quality is much higher than Mirissa.

Bonus Tip: Drink twice as much water as you think you need. April humidity is no joke! Enjoy your trip!
