Is it safe to drink tap water anywhere in Sri Lanka, or should I always buy bottled?

I'm trying to reduce plastic waste during my trip and wondering if tap water is drinkable at any point — in Colombo city hotels, guesthouses in Ella, or anywhere really. I've heard conflicting things. Some say filtered water from restaurants is fine, others say never drink anything that isn't sealed. Would also appreciate any tips on purification options (tablets, filters) that travellers actually use here.

Short answer: do not drink tap water directly anywhere in Sri Lanka, including Colombo 5-star hotels.

The tap water here is treated but the old pipe infrastructure means by the time it reaches your tap it's not reliably safe for someone whose stomach isn't adapted to local bacteria.

What is safe:
- Sealed bottled water (widely available, LKR 70–100 for 1.5L)
- Water served in jugs at reputable restaurants — they filter and boil it
- Tea and coffee made with boiled water
- Fresh coconut water straight from the coconut (very safe and delicious)

To reduce plastic:
- Buy 5L or 10L refill bottles from supermarkets (Keells, Cargills) — much cheaper per litre and reduces single-use plastic
- Carry a SteriPen UV purifier or Sawyer Squeeze filter — both work excellently here
- Many guesthouses have filtered water dispensers — ask on check-in

I tell all my guests: when in doubt, boil it or filter it. Your stomach will thank you.

Travelled for 3 weeks with a Sawyer Squeeze filter. Used it constantly — filled from guesthouse taps, even from a spigot at a temple. Had zero stomach issues. Highly recommend this approach over buying plastic bottles. Weighs almost nothing in your bag.

Specific advice for Colombo: the National Water Supply & Drainage Board water is technically treated, and locals who grew up here drink it without issue because our systems are adapted. Tourists should not take the same risk. Even we filter at home. Boiled water in sealed flasks — served free at most local restaurants — is totally fine.
