Yala vs Udawalawe national park — which is better for a first-time safari in Sri Lanka?
We have one day for a safari and can't visit both. I've read that Yala has leopards but is very crowded and commercialised, while Udawalawe is better for elephants and less touristy. We are a family with two kids (ages 8 and 11) who have never done a wildlife safari before. Which would you recommend and why? We're visiting in February.

Wildlife guide here, I work in both parks. For your specific situation — first-time safari, two young kids, February visit — Udawalawe is the better choice, and here's why:
Udawalawe advantages for families:
- Virtually guaranteed elephant sightings (herds of 50–100 are common)
- More open terrain = better visibility, less waiting
- Shorter half-day safari (3 hours) suits younger children
- Less chaotic than Yala
- Elephant Transit Home nearby — kids love it
- Leopard sightings are rare but not impossible
Yala realities in February:
- Leopard density is high but sightings still not guaranteed
- Very crowded — 200+ jeeps on weekends in Feb (peak season)
- Jeep congestion around leopard sightings can mean 50 jeeps surrounding one animal
- Half the park (Zone 1) is most visited and gets unbearably crowded
- Zones 2–5 are better but require planning
Verdict: Unless seeing a leopard is the primary goal and you're willing to handle crowds, Udawalawe gives a better family safari experience. Your kids will go home talking about the elephants regardless.
We did Udawalawe with our kids (7 and 9) in March last year. Within 20 minutes of entering we had a herd of about 60 elephants crossing right in front of our jeep. The kids were absolutely stunned. We also saw crocodiles, water buffalo, peacocks, and various birds. Spent 3.5 hours and it never got boring. 100% recommend for families.
If you want to do Yala but avoid the crowds: book a private jeep (not shared), go to Zone 2 or Zone 3 instead of Zone 1, and enter right at gate opening (6 AM). Avoid Saturday and Sunday entirely in peak season. With a good private guide who knows animal movements you have a real chance at a leopard and a much better experience than the Zone 1 circus.
Practical cost comparison for two adults + two kids:
- Udawalawe: park fee ~USD 30/person, jeep hire ~LKR 8,000–12,000 (shared) or 15,000–20,000 (private)
- Yala: park fee ~USD 30/person, jeep hire ~LKR 12,000–18,000 (shared) or 20,000–30,000 (private)
Udawalawe is noticeably cheaper and in my view delivers a better experience for first-timers.
