Arriving late at night at Bandaranaike International Airport and need to reach Galle. I've seen options including the airport expressway taxi, private drivers, and taking a bus to Colombo and then another to Galle. The train doesn't go directly. What is the most practical option for a solo traveller arriving around 11 PM with one large bag? Budget matters but safety after dark matters more.

For a solo traveller arriving at 11 PM, here are your realistic options ranked by practicality:

Option 1 — Pre-booked private transfer (recommended)
- Book a reputable transfer service in advance: USD 40–60 Colombo airport to Galle
- Driver meets you in arrivals with your name sign
- Safe, direct, door-to-door, no late-night stress
- Providers: Malkey Travels, Airport Transfers Sri Lanka (book online before arrival)
- Travel time: ~2.5 hours (less traffic at night, usually 2 hours)

Option 2 — Airport taxi counter (official)
- Inside the arrivals terminal there is an official taxi counter
- Fixed rate: approximately LKR 7,000–9,000 to Galle
- Registered, metered, safe. Slightly more expensive than pre-booked but reliable if you didn't book ahead

Option 3 — PickMe/Uber
- Works from the airport, can be cheaper but surge pricing at 11 PM sometimes applies
- Driver supply can be low at that hour
- Fine option but less predictable

Do not attempt:
- Bus at 11 PM — the direct Galle bus stops running around 8–9 PM, and connecting via Colombo at midnight with a large bag is inadvisable
- Random touts outside arrivals who approach you — always use the official counter or pre-booked driver

What I recommend: pre-book the transfer. It costs more than a bus but for late-night arrivals in an unfamiliar country the peace of mind is worth every rupee.

I arrived at 10:30 PM and used the official taxi counter inside arrivals. Paid around LKR 8,200 to Galle, car was clean, driver was professional and spoke good English. Arrived at my guesthouse at 12:45 AM. No issues at all. Definitely the right call for a late arrival.

One additional option worth knowing: Negombo stay and morning travel. If your flight lands late at 11 PM, consider staying the night in Negombo (5 minutes from the airport, many good guesthouses for USD 20–35) and then taking the comfortable morning express bus or hiring a driver to Galle in daylight. The Colombo–Galle expressway by day is fast and comfortable. This approach means you arrive in Galle rested and in daylight — much better for your first impression of the country.

Budget note: if cost is the absolute priority and you are comfortable with public transport, the option that works is: official taxi to Colombo Pettah bus station (LKR 2,500 from airport), sleep a few hours in a guesthouse near the bus stand, take the first Galle bus at 5:30 AM (LKR 200). Total cost under USD 20. Not ideal for 11 PM arrival but it is possible and safe if you stay in well-reviewed accommodation near Pettah.
