Arriving at Colombo airport next week and want to sort out a local SIM card immediately. I've seen Dialog, Mobitel, and Airtel mentioned. A few specific questions:
1. Which can I buy at the airport and what does it cost?
2. Which has the best 4G coverage across the whole country — including hill country (Ella, Nuwara Eliya) and the east coast (Arugam Bay)?
3. Are tourist SIM packages actually better value than buying a regular SIM?
4. Do I need my passport to register?

Worked in telecom here for 10 years. Definitive answer for 2025:

Dialog is the best choice for tourists. Here's the full breakdown:

At the airport:
- All three operators (Dialog, Mobitel, Airtel) have counters in arrivals at BIA
- Dialog tourist SIM: LKR 500–1,500 depending on package (1 GB to 10 GB data bundles available)
- Open 24 hours — you can get it the moment you land
- Yes, passport required for registration (mandatory by TRCSL regulation)

Coverage comparison:
- Dialog: best 4G coverage nationwide including hill country, east coast, and remote areas. This is not even close.
- Mobitel: good in Colombo and major cities, drops significantly in Ella and Arugam Bay
- Airtel: competitive pricing but weakest rural coverage of the three

Tourist packages vs regular SIM:
- Tourist packages are marginally better value and come pre-registered
- You can also buy a regular SIM and add data bundles — often cheaper for longer stays (14+ days)
- For a 1–2 week trip: tourist package. For longer: regular SIM + bundles

Data speeds:
- Dialog 4G in Colombo: 20–50 Mbps typical
- Dialog 4G in Ella: 5–15 Mbps (sufficient for maps, messaging, video calls)
- In very remote areas (Knuckles range, deep jungle): expect 2G/3G only — no operator solves this

Recommended package: Dialog "Tourist SIM" with 6 GB data for LKR 990 — valid 30 days, covers a typical trip comfortably.

Just returned from 10 days with Dialog. Bought at the airport counter, took 5 minutes, passport scanned, got a 5 GB package for LKR 790. Signal was excellent everywhere — Colombo, Kandy, Ella train, Yala safari, and even on the Colombo–Galle expressway. Only real dead zones were inside Dambulla cave and briefly in some Ella mountain tunnels. Highly recommend.

Additional note on eSIM: if your phone supports eSIM, several providers now offer Sri Lanka eSIM packages you can purchase and install before you leave home (Airalo, Holafly, etc.). Prices are competitive with physical SIMs and saves the airport queue. Dialog's own eSIM option launched in 2024 and is available through their website. Worth considering if you want zero hassle on arrival.

One practical tip: before you leave the airport SIM counter, test your data connection while the rep is still there. Occasionally a SIM needs a reset to activate properly. Also save the Dialog customer care number (+94 777 678 678) — they have English-speaking support and can activate bundles via SMS, which is useful if you run out of data mid-trip.
