How do I get from Ella to Sigiriya — what is the best route and how long does it take?
I'm planning my itinerary and struggling to figure out the Ella to Sigiriya leg. Looking at the map it seems like there should be a direct route but every option I research involves changing at Colombo which seems crazy given the distance. Is there a direct bus? Can I take a train part of the way? Is hiring a private driver the only realistic option? Rough cost comparison would be very helpful.

This route catches many tourists off guard because there is no direct train and the bus route is genuinely awkward. Here are your three realistic options:
Option 1 — Private driver (recommended)
- Direct Ella to Sigiriya: ~180 km, approximately 4.5–5.5 hours depending on route
- Cost: LKR 12,000–18,000 for the full car (not per person)
- Most drivers will stop at Dambulla Cave Temple en route at no extra charge — a perfect combo day
- This is by far the most flexible and comfortable option
Option 2 — Bus via Kandy
- Ella → Wellawaya (bus, 1 hour) → Kandy (bus or van, 3–4 hours) → Dambulla (bus, 1.5 hours) → Sigiriya (tuk-tuk, 30 min)
- Total: 7–9 hours including waits
- Cost: roughly LKR 500–800 all in
- Exhausting but doable for budget travellers
Option 3 — Train to Kandy then private driver/bus
- Ella → Kandy by train (6–7 hours, scenic)
- Kandy → Sigiriya by private driver (2 hours, LKR 5,000–7,000) or bus (2.5–3 hours)
- Good compromise if you haven't done the Kandy–Ella train yet in the reverse direction
My honest recommendation: hire a private driver directly from Ella. The mountain road through Welimada and Matale is scenic, the driver can stop at Dambulla, and you arrive in Sigiriya rested. Worth every rupee of the extra cost versus a 9-hour bus ordeal.
Did this exact route last month by private driver. Left Ella at 7 AM, stopped at Dambulla at 11 AM (perfect timing, caves not yet crowded), arrived Sigiriya guesthouse by 2 PM. Driver charged LKR 14,500 which split between two of us was very reasonable. He also knew a great local lunch spot in Dambulla town — rice and curry for LKR 350.
Budget option that actually works if you're not in a hurry: take the early morning bus from Ella to Nanu Oya (1 hour), then the scenic train from Nanu Oya to Kandy (4.5 hours) — this is the reverse of the famous Ella–Kandy route and equally beautiful. From Kandy, regular buses run to Dambulla every 30 minutes (LKR 120, 1.5 hours). From Dambulla, a tuk-tuk to Sigiriya costs around LKR 600–800. Full day journey but you get the train experience and save a lot.
