I can only fit one major beach destination into my 12-day itinerary. I've narrowed it down to Trincomalee (east coast) or Mirissa (south coast). I'm visiting in March. Key things that matter to me: water clarity for swimming, fewer crowds, whale watching possibility, and an authentic Sri Lankan feel rather than a fully commercialised resort strip. Which would you choose and why?

For a March visit specifically, the answer is clear: Mirissa (south coast).

Why not Trincomalee in March:
- Trincomalee's best season is May–September when the northeast monsoon has passed
- In March, the east coast is in transition — seas can be rough, and many guesthouses and dive shops in Trinco are either closed or understaffed
- Pigeon Island (best snorkeling) is often inaccessible due to wave conditions in March

Why Mirissa in March:
- Peak season (December–April) — perfect weather, calm seas, warm water
- Blue whale watching: March is one of the best months. Sightings are very reliable.
- Water clarity for swimming is excellent
- Full tourist infrastructure operating, excellent choice of accommodation
- Authentic Sri Lankan feel: the fishing village around the harbour is still very much a working community

For your other criteria:
- Fewer crowds: go on weekdays. Mirissa weekends (especially Sri Lankan holidays) are busy.
- Whale watching: March is peak whale season — this should tip the scales entirely

Verdict for March: Mirissa wins decisively. Save Trincomalee for a future trip in June or July when Pigeon Island is at its best.

Visited both in different trips. Mirissa in February was magical — we saw two blue whales and a pod of spinner dolphins on the same boat trip, swam in perfectly clear warm water, and ate the freshest grilled fish at a harbour restaurant for LKR 1,200. Trincomalee in July was even more beautiful but completely different vibe — quieter, less developed, Pigeon Island was outstanding. Both are worth doing, but as a first beach choice in March, Mirissa is the right answer.

One consideration for "authentic Sri Lankan feel": Mirissa is fairly commercialised now along the main beach strip, but 10 minutes walk east of the main beach you reach local fishing areas that are genuinely un-touristy. The fish market near the harbour at 5–6 AM when the boats come in is a highlight. For a truly un-commercialised beach experience in the south, consider Tangalle (45 minutes east of Mirissa) as a quieter alternative base.
