Best street food in Colombo — kottu, hoppers, and wade — where do locals actually go?

Spending 3 days in Colombo at the start of my trip and I want to eat street food properly, not restaurant versions. I already know about Galle Face Green for isso wade and lunu dehi, but I'd love recommendations for:

- Best kottu roti spots (preferably open late)
- Where to get egg or plain hoppers for breakfast
- Any specific street markets or food courts worth visiting
- Is there a night market in Colombo comparable to Pettah but more food-focused?

I'm completely comfortable walking around and eating at plastic-chair places — budget is not a concern, authenticity is.

Born and raised in Colombo, and street food is something I know inside out. Here's the real answer:

Kottu Roti (late night):
- Pilawoos Hotel (Kollupitiya) — 24 hours, famous, always busy. Order the cheese kottu. Extremely good, LKR 600–900.
- Chop Chop (multiple locations) — slightly more upmarket but authentic taste
- Any small Muslim-owned hotel (hotel = local restaurant) in Pettah — best value, open late, no English menu but point at what others are eating

Hoppers (breakfast, 6–10 AM):
- Upali's by Nawaloka (Nawam Mawatha) — a Colombo institution, full Sri Lankan breakfast, LKR 400–700
- Hotel de Pilawoos — again, they also do hoppers in the morning
- Any roadside kade (small stall) in Nugegoda or Dehiwala — but you need to find these by walking around local neighbourhoods

Markets and food areas:
- Pettah market area — streets around Manning Market for the most chaotic, authentic street food experience. Isso wade, roti, green mango with chili. Go before noon.
- Galle Face Green (evenings) — isso wade (prawn fritters) and lunu dehi (salted lime) are iconic here. LKR 50–150 per piece.
- Arcade Independence Square — more curated food court but good for a mixed group

Best night street food: The stretch around Baseline Road (Dematagoda side) has excellent late-night short eats stalls. Not on any tourist list.

Seconding Pilawoos for kottu. I went at midnight on a Saturday and the place was packed with locals. Order the mixed kottu (egg + chicken + vegetables + cheese). Also get a Milo or a fried egg roll from the counter. Total for two people: LKR 2,000 including drinks. Unforgettable.

For hoppers specifically: the neighbourhood of Borella and Cinnamon Gardens has fantastic local hopper spots that see very few tourists. Wander the side streets early morning and follow the smell of coconut oil and the sound of the iron pans. A plate of two hoppers with dhal and pol sambol costs LKR 150–200. Bring cash only.
