Staying inside Galle Fort — is it worth the premium and which guesthouses are actually good?

Trying to decide between staying inside the Galle Fort walls vs a beach resort just outside. Inside the fort looks atmospheric but prices are significantly higher and I've read the streets are noisy at night with generators and roosters.

Looking for advice on:
1. Is the experience of sleeping inside the fort genuinely worth the extra cost?
2. What are the actual noise levels at night — is it manageable?
3. Any specific guesthouses or boutique hotels inside the fort walls that offer good value?
4. Alternatively, is staying just outside the fort and walking in during the day just as good?

Budget: moderate (USD 60–120/night for two adults). We care about atmosphere and character more than amenities.

I live in Galle and know the fort well. My honest take:

Is staying inside worth it?
Yes — but only if you book the right place and set the right expectations. The fort at night (after 9 PM when day-trippers leave) is genuinely magical. You can walk the ramparts at sunset, eat at restaurants you'd need to queue for during the day, and wake up to an atmosphere that no beach resort can replicate.

The noise issue:
Generator noise is real but confined to a few streets near the main gate and market area. The lanes toward the lighthouse end and the seaward ramparts are quiet. Ask specifically about the room's location relative to the main road and the mosque (morning call to prayer at 5 AM is part of the atmosphere, not everyone finds it charming).

Good value options inside the fort (USD 60–120 range):
- Smaller boutique guesthouses on the quieter residential lanes toward the lighthouse offer excellent character at lower prices than the famous heritage hotels
- Look for guesthouses with rooftop access — watching sunset from the fort walls from your own property is worth paying for
- Breakfast included is standard at most guesthouses

Staying outside and walking in:
Perfectly viable — the fort is 10 minutes walk from the beach strip hotels. But you miss the evening atmosphere entirely, which is the best part.

Stayed inside the fort for 3 nights. The lanes after 9 PM were essentially ours — just us, cats, and the sound of the ocean. Breakfast on a rooftop terrace watching the ramparts turn pink at sunrise. It was worth every extra rupee. Would not do Galle any other way now. Noise in our guesthouse (near the Dutch Hospital area) was a non-issue.
