First time surfing and I've heard Weligama Bay is the best place in Sri Lanka for total beginners. Visiting in January.

Questions:
1. Is Weligama genuinely the best beginner spot, or is there somewhere better for first-timers?
2. What are the wave conditions like in January — is it reliable?
3. How much do surf lessons cost and are there reputable schools I should use?
4. Is it possible to learn enough in 3–4 days to feel confident on a small wave?
5. Can I rent a board without a lesson, or will instructors push you into paying for lessons regardless?

I'm athletic and have good water confidence — just no surfing experience at all.

Weligama is the right choice for absolute beginners — here's why and what to expect:

Why Weligama works for beginners:
The bay is wide and gently curved, creating long, slow, crumbling waves that break in shallow water over sand. These are ideal learning waves — forgiving enough to fall on repeatedly and long enough to practice riding. There are no reef hazards in the main beginner zone.

January conditions:
This is the south coast dry season and one of the best months for Weligama. Waves are consistent 0.5–1.5m, usually offshore winds in the morning. Very reliable for lessons.

Costs (2025):
- 2-hour group lesson: USD 20–30 per person (board + rash vest + instructor included)
- Private lesson: USD 40–60 for 2 hours
- Board rental alone (no instruction): USD 10–15/day once you've had some lessons

Realistic expectations for 3–4 days:
With daily 2-hour lessons, most athletic beginners are standing and riding small waves by day 2–3. You won't be surfing big waves by day 4, but you will have the fundamentals and be able to rent a board and practice independently on a calm day.

Picking a school:
All the main schools on Weligama beach are broadly similar in quality. Avoid anyone who approaches you on the beach with very low prices — go to an established school with a physical location, proper boards (not just old foamies), and instructors in branded rash vests.

Learned at Weligama last January with zero experience. Day 1: couldn't stand up at all. Day 2: standing and riding maybe 1 in 5 waves. Day 3: feeling it, starting to steer slightly. By day 4 I rented a board alone and had the best session of the trip. Instructor was patient and gave clear feedback. Go early in the morning (7–9 AM) for the best waves and fewest people in the water.
