Two weeks vs three weeks in Sri Lanka — what do you realistically cover and what gets cut?
I can get either 14 or 21 days off work and I'm trying to decide which is worth it for Sri Lanka. I don't want to rush but I also don't want to pad time in places that don't warrant it.
1. What is a realistic 2-week itinerary covering the highlights without feeling rushed?
2. What do you gain in a third week — is it worth the extra week or does it lead to diminishing returns?
3. Which destinations require more time than people typically allocate?
4. Which popular stops can be skipped entirely without missing much?
5. How much time does getting between places actually eat up?
6. Is it better to go deep in fewer places or cover more ground?
I want to do: Cultural Triangle, Hill Country (Ella/Kandy), south coast beaches, and one wildlife park. Is 2 weeks enough or will I feel rushed?

This is the most common planning question I help people with. Here is the clear answer:
2 weeks (14 days) — what you can comfortably cover:
- Days 1–2: Colombo
- Days 3–5: Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa) — 3 days is minimum to do it without rushing
- Days 6–7: Kandy (Temple of the Tooth, Peradeniya, day trip to Pinnawala)
- Day 8: Kandy → Ella (scenic train, the famous route)
- Days 9–10: Ella (hikes, Nine Arch Bridge, Ella Rock)
- Days 11–12: Wildlife (Udawalawe, 2 days is perfect)
- Days 13–14: South coast beach (Mirissa or Tangalle)
- Day 15: Colombo (buffer + flight)
This is a satisfying complete loop that doesn't feel rushed if you don't over-plan each day.
What the third week gives you:
- 2–3 extra days on the south coast beach
- Ability to add Galle Fort as a proper stop rather than passing through
- A Nuwara Eliya detour from the Kandy–Ella route
- Trincomalee or Arugam Bay on the east coast (adds a different travel season dynamic)
- A Jaffna extension for the culturally curious
Is 3 weeks worth it? Yes — Sri Lanka rewards slower travel. The extra week removes almost all of the "we should have spent longer there" regret. If you can take it, take it.
What gets cut at 2 weeks: Nuwara Eliya, Galle Fort (as a proper stop), east coast, Jaffna, second wildlife area. These are all worthwhile things to cut if you prioritise depth over breadth.
Did 3 weeks and still wished I had more time in Ella and on the east coast. The third week let us slow down — 3 nights in Ella instead of 2, a proper day in Galle Fort, and 4 days in Trincomalee. If we'd done 2 weeks we would have had to skip Trinco entirely. That would have been a significant loss — Nilaveli beach and Pigeon Island were highlights. Take the 3 weeks.
