Getting from Colombo to Kandy — train, bus, or taxi, and which is genuinely best?

The Colombo to Kandy route appears on every itinerary but I can't get a clear answer on which transport option is actually best rather than just "cheapest".

1. What are all the realistic options for getting from Colombo to Kandy?
2. How long does the train actually take vs the bus vs a taxi — with traffic?
3. Is the train scenic on this route or is that reputation only for the hill country section beyond Kandy?
4. How do I book a train seat and which class should I take?
5. What is the intercity express bus and is it comfortable?
6. Is a private taxi worth the extra cost and how much does it cost?
7. What time of day is best to travel each way?
8. Is the Colombo–Kandy road known for traffic and delays?

I'm travelling light and value comfort and reliability over cost.

I coordinate private transport between Colombo and Kandy regularly. Here is the complete honest guide.

Options and realistic travel times:

1. Intercity Express Train: Colombo Fort → Kandy, 2.5–3 hours. Six scheduled trains per day (6 AM through 7 PM). Air-conditioned 1st class available (reserved, LKR 800 one-way). 2nd class unreserved (LKR 190, often crowded). The route climbs through rubber plantations and paddy fields — scenic but not the dramatic tea-country scenery of Kandy–Ella. Reliable, comfortable if booked 1st class. Book via Sri Lanka Railways website or on the day at Colombo Fort station.

2. Intercity Express Bus (CTB or private): 2.5–3.5 hours depending on traffic. Departs Colombo Central Bus Stand (Pettah) approximately every 30 minutes. LKR 180–280 for private express. Air-conditioned private coaches available (book at the bus stand). Faster than you expect on the expressway section, slower through Kandy's approaches.

3. Private taxi/driver: 2–3 hours, LKR 6,000–9,000 one-way. PickMe app offers fixed fares (more reliable than negotiating). Best option if travelling with luggage, early/late hours, or wanting direct door-to-door.

Traffic consideration: The Kandy Road (A1) through Kadugannawa Pass is a known bottleneck. Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings have severe congestion. The expressway (E03) is faster but requires exiting at Meerigama and rejoining the A1 — some taxis use this route.

My recommendation: Train (1st class reserved) for the experience and reliability. Private taxi if arriving/departing odd hours or with significant luggage.

Did this route three times across two trips. The 1st class train (reserved air-con) is the clear winner for comfort — arrives at Kandy station which is central, 5 minutes from the lake. The bus is faster on a good traffic day but arrives at the Goods Shed bus station which is a tuk-tuk ride from anywhere useful. Private taxis are good value for early starts (first train is 5:55 AM which is painful). Book 1st class train seats on the Sri Lanka Railways website 2–3 days ahead.
