Kitulgala white water rafting - is it genuinely good and is it safe enough for someone who's never rafted before?

I keep seeing Kitulgala mentioned for white water rafting and it's making me curious. I've never rafted before but I'm fit and fairly adventurous.

1. What grade is the white water at Kitulgala - is it appropriate for a first-timer?
2. How long is the rafting section and is it actually thrilling or more of a gentle float?
3. Is it safe - what safety equipment and standards do the operators use?
4. How do I tell a good operator from a dodgy one?
5. What else is there to do in Kitulgala beyond rafting?
6. How do I get there from Colombo or Kandy?
7. Is the Kelani River clean enough that falling in isn't a health concern?
8. What time of year is best for rafting and when is the water level too low or too high?

I'm coming from Seoul and I do a fair amount of hiking and sport. I just want to know if I should build a half day or full day around it.

I run rafting here and I've been on this river for 12 years. Let me give you accurate information.

The white water at Kitulgala on the Kelani River is Grade 3-4, depending on the season and water levels. For a first-timer this is manageable with a competent guide. Grade 3 means exciting rapids with waves and some technical maneuvering - nothing that requires prior experience. Grade 4 sections can appear after heavy rain and those are more serious. We always assess conditions before putting first-timers on Grade 4.

The rafting section itself is about 5km and takes 2-2.5 hours on the water. It is genuinely thrilling, not a gentle float. There are proper rapids and you will almost certainly fall in at some point (or choose to jump in at the swimming holes). The river is clean enough to swim in - no industrial pollution in this section, which is uncommon in Sri Lanka.

Safety equipment: life jackets, helmets, and safety kayakers are standard on any legitimate operator. Ask specifically about the safety kayakers before you book - these are the kayakers who paddle alongside the raft and retrieve people from the water. If a company doesn't mention them, look elsewhere.

Operator check: meet the guide before you pay, ask how long they've been guiding this river, look at whether the equipment is maintained. The best operators have SLAF (Sri Lanka Adventure Foundation) certified guides.

Beyond rafting: canyoning, rock climbing, and jungle trekking are also available in Kitulgala. The area is also where Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed (in the jungle sections). Worth a half-day even if you don't raft.

Getting here: 90 minutes from Colombo or Kandy by car or bus. Bus from Colombo Central (Pettah) to Kitulgala runs regularly for about LKR 200.

Best months: November to May for reliable water levels. June to September after heavy monsoon rains the water can run too high and fast for safe rafting.

Did this as a day trip from Colombo with zero prior rafting experience. Three proper rapids, fell out on the second one, got pulled back in by the safety kayaker in about 10 seconds. The rest of the group (mostly locals on a weekend trip) thought it was hilarious. Then we stopped at a swimming hole and jumped off rocks for 30 minutes. The whole thing cost about LKR 4,500 including transport from a Colombo meetup point. Absolutely worth it for a half day.

One practical note: the river has leeches on the jungle bank sections when you're walking to the put-in point. Wear shoes you don't mind getting wet (they provide water shoes on some tours but ask). The leeches are a minor thing and the guides deal with them routinely. Also bring a waterproof bag or bag to leave your phone at the base camp. Don't take it on the water even in a zip-lock - a proper waterproof case or just leave it behind.
