I’m from the UK. Is my visa "Free" or "Visa-Free"? Do I still need to apply?
There are so many conflicting news articles about the "New Tourist Visa Scheme" for 2026. Some say it's "Visa Free" (like showing up with just a passport), others say it's a "Free Visa" where you still need to apply online but pay $0.
I am flying in 3 days. Do I need to go to eta.gov.lk or can I just walk through immigration? I don't want to get fined at the airport.

This is the #1 most searched question right now! The terminology is confusing, so here is the strict rule for January 2026:
It is NOT "Visa-Free" (like Singapore): You cannot just walk up to the counter with only your passport. You must still have an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).
It is a "Free Visa Scheme": For nationals of the designated 35+ countries (including UK, EU, USA, India, China, Aus, etc.), the fee is waived. You still go to eta.gov.lk, fill out the form, and when you get to the payment page, the total should show $0.00.
The Critical Step: You must receive the "ETA Approval" email before you fly. Airlines will not let you board without this confirmation, even if it was free. Do not assume you can just "get it at the counter" without delays.
