Bentota - is it worth stopping between Colombo and Galle or should I just keep going?

Most itineraries I've read either include Bentota or skip it entirely. I can't work out from the descriptions whether it's genuinely worth a day or two or whether it's mostly for package holiday tourists.

1. What is Bentota actually like - is it a proper beach town or a resort strip?
2. Is the beach good for swimming or are there currents to worry about?
3. What is the Bentota River safari and is it worth doing?
4. What water sports are available and how is the quality?
5. Is there anything to do in Bentota beyond beach and water activities?
6. How does it compare to Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna for the beach experience?
7. Is it better as a standalone destination or just a day trip from Galle?
8. What is the accommodation like - budget options or mainly resorts?

I'm travelling Finland to Sri Lanka solo for 3 weeks. Looking for honest comparisons not promotional content.

I work in Bentota and know it well. Here's the honest picture.

Bentota is a genuine destination but it targets a different type of traveller than Hikkaduwa or Unawatuna. It's quieter, more upmarket, more resort-focused. If you want budget beach backpacker energy, this isn't your place. If you want calm, good water sports, and a pretty river, it's excellent.

The beach: long, wide, and clean. The waves are gentler than Hikkaduwa. Swimming is generally safe in the sheltered bay sections though the southern end has stronger currents. Not a party beach - you won't find many beach bars or beach sellers here, which is either good or bad depending on your preference.

The Bentota River safari: genuinely worth doing. A 2-3 hour boat trip up the river goes through mangrove channels, passes cinnamon, pepper, and spice plantations, and there's good bird life if you go early. Crocodile sightings are possible. Cost around LKR 2,000-3,500 per person for a decent tour. Combine with a visit to a small local boat builder's yard if your guide offers it.

Water sports: jet skiing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, and boat rides are all available at several operators on the beach. Prices are reasonable by international standards. Equipment quality varies so ask to see the gear before committing.

Vs Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna: Hikkaduwa has better diving and a livelier scene. Unawatuna has better snorkelling and proximity to Galle. Bentota has a better beach for just relaxing and the river experience is something neither of the others offer. Different, not worse.

Accommodation: mostly mid-range to resort. Budget options exist in the village inland from the beach, about LKR 2,500-4,000 per night for a simple room. The beach-facing places are expensive.

Day trip from Galle: possible (about 45km, 1 hour), but I'd say it's better as a 2-night standalone.

Stopped in Bentota for 2 nights between Colombo and Galle. Didn't regret it. The river safari was the highlight - went at 7am, saw a monitor lizard swimming across the river, a pair of kingfishers, and the mangrove tunnel sections were beautiful and completely quiet. The beach itself is genuinely nice, calm water, no hustle. Would have been bored there for more than 2 nights but as a stop it was the right call.
