ATMs running out of cash in Ella/Mirissa? How much cash should I carry?

We are currently in Mirissa and the last three ATMs we tried were "Out of Service" or empty. Is this a banking crisis, or just because it's January peak season?

We are heading to Ella next. Should we hoard cash now? We usually rely on Apple Pay but smaller restaurants aren't taking it.

This is a classic "Peak Season" problem, not an economic crisis.

The Cause: In January, towns like Ella and Mirissa have 5x their normal population. The ATM machines literally run out of physical cash by 6:00 PM because the banks can't refill them fast enough.

Apple Pay Reality: While Apple Pay is growing in Colombo, 90% of cafes/tuk-tuks in Ella/Mirissa still only take Cash or physical Visa/Mastercard.

The Strategy:

Withdraw a large chunk (50,000+ LKR) when you are in a big city (Galle or Kandy) before heading to the small beach/hill towns.

Try ATMs in the morning (before 10 AM) when they have just been refilled.

Look for "Commercial Bank" or "HNB" machines, they have the highest cash reserves.
