Dambulla Cave Temple - is it worth a dedicated visit or just a quick stop between Sigiriya and Kandy?

The Dambulla Cave Temple is listed on most cultural triangle itineraries alongside Sigiriya and Anuradhapura. I want to know if it stands on its own or if it's just a box to tick.

1. What exactly is inside the Dambulla caves and what makes them significant?
2. How long do you need to properly visit and appreciate the site?
3. Is the entrance fee worth it and how does it compare to Sigiriya in value?
4. What is the dress code and are there things that would get me turned away at the entrance?
5. What time of day is best to visit and when does it get most crowded?
6. Is it genuinely impressive to someone who is not deeply religious or is the appeal mainly for Buddhists?
7. Are there monkeys and do they cause problems?
8. Can it be combined with Sigiriya in the same day or does it need its own half day?

I'm from Budapest and I'm doing the full cultural triangle circuit. I want to understand what makes Dambulla worth stopping for versus just reading about it.

I cover the whole cultural triangle including Dambulla and I'll give you the genuine answer on whether it stands alone.

What is inside: five cave temples cut into a granite outcrop and continuously used as places of worship since the 1st century BC. The caves contain 153 Buddha statues, paintings covering 2,100 square metres of ceiling and wall space, and numerous other religious objects accumulated over 2,000 years of continuous occupation. The oldest paintings date to the 15th and 16th centuries, though layers go back much further.

Is it impressive to a non-Buddhist: yes, genuinely, and this surprises people. The scale is the first thing - you enter a low door and the ceiling opens into a space larger than expected, every surface covered with intricate paintings and dozens of Buddha figures in various postures. The quality of the painting, the atmospheric dim light, the incense, and the mixture of religious objects from different periods creates an atmosphere that is genuinely otherworldly. Cave 2, the largest, with the Maharaja Vihara murals and a 14-metre reclining Buddha, is one of the most atmospheric single spaces I know in Sri Lanka.

Time needed: an hour is enough to see the main caves properly. An hour and a half if you are a photographer and want to work with the light at each cave entrance. The walk up the rock to reach the caves is about 15 minutes on a paved but steep path.

Dress code: mandatory. Shoulders and knees must be covered. Shoes must be removed at the base of the stairs before you ascend. They do enforce this and you will be turned away if you are in shorts and a sleeveless top. Sarongs are available to borrow at the entrance.

Monkeys: yes, a known issue. Macaque monkeys inhabit the cliff area and they are bold. Do not carry food openly, keep bags closed, and don't leave anything unattended. They steal sunglasses and hats. Keep your bag closed at all times and do not approach them.

With Sigiriya in one day: completely feasible and the standard approach. Dambulla is about 17km from Sigiriya (20-30 minutes by car). Most visitors do Dambulla first (it opens at 7am) then Sigiriya, or Sigiriya in the morning and Dambulla on the way back in the afternoon. The afternoon light inside the caves is excellent.

Did Dambulla first thing at 7:30am before the tour groups arrived. Had Cave 2 essentially to myself for 20 minutes. The light comes through the cave entrance in a specific direction at that hour and the effect on the paintings was remarkable. By 9am the caves were noticeably busier with organised groups. The walk up is steeper than it looks from the base but takes less than 15 minutes. One thing I was not prepared for: the incense smoke in the closed caves is strong. If you are sensitive to smoke, be aware - ventilation is limited.
