Hearing about a "Dengue Outbreak" in Colombo/Negombo. Should we cancel our final days in the city?

We are finishing our trip next week and planned to spend 2 days shopping in Colombo. Our driver mentioned that Dengue cases are very high right now due to the recent rains.

Is it safe to walk around Colombo parks? Or should we just head straight to the airport from the beach?

January is historically a "high spike" month for Dengue because the December rains leave stagnant water where mosquitos breed.

Don't Cancel: You definitely don't need to cancel your Colombo trip. The risk is manageable if you are smart.

The Danger Zones: Avoid walking in heavy vegetation areas (like Viharamahadevi Park) at dawn and dusk. Mosquitos are less active in the concrete areas/shopping malls (like One Galle Face or Odel).

Protection: Wear mosquito repellent (Odomos or DEET) even during the day if you are outdoors.

Symptoms: If you get a sudden high fever and joint pain, go to a private hospital (like Asiri or Lanka Hospitals) immediately for a "Full Blood Count" test. It takes 1 hour and costs $5. It is better to know fast.
