How cheap can you realistically travel Sri Lanka on a shoestring - $25-30 USD per day?
I'm backpacking on about $25-30 USD per day total including accommodation, food, transport, and entrance fees. Is this doable in Sri Lanka or will I constantly be stressed about money? What are the biggest costs to prepare for? Any local tips to eat and stay well without paying tourist prices?

$25-30 USD per day is tight but absolutely achievable in Sri Lanka if you make smart choices. Here is a realistic daily breakdown.
Accommodation: $6-12 USD
- Dorm beds in guesthouses: $5-8 (Colombo, Kandy, Ella, Galle all have decent hostels)
- Private room in a local guesthouse: $10-15
Food: $6-9 USD
- Rice and curry at a local "hotel" (the Sinhalese word for a small restaurant): 300-600 LKR for a full meal with three or four curries
- Roti and dhal from a roadside stall: 150-200 LKR
- Eating at tourist-facing restaurants immediately doubles your costs
Transport: $3-5 USD
- Intercity buses are extraordinarily cheap: Colombo to Kandy by bus is 180 LKR (about $0.60)
- Trains are similarly cheap for standard classes
- Tuk-tuks are the main variable expense - always agree on a price before you get in
Entrance fees: the budget killer
- Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla etc cost $30-35 each for foreigners. You cannot negotiate these. Build them into your daily average separately.
- The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura) can total $80-100 just for entry fees
Biggest tips:
1. Eat where locals eat - if there is no Sinhala script on the menu, the price has already been adjusted
2. Travel by public bus instead of private transfers wherever possible
3. Avoid private drivers unless splitting costs with other travellers
Kasun's breakdown is accurate. One tip from the road: the Cultural Triangle Round Ticket was discontinued so you pay per site now. If you plan to visit Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla, and Anuradhapura, budget around $100 just for entrance fees. Everything else in Sri Lanka is shockingly affordable by comparison.
