Colombo to Kandy - is the train or bus actually faster, and which is more comfortable?
I'm arriving in Colombo and heading straight to Kandy the same day. I've seen both train and bus options. The train sounds scenic but I've read it can be slow. How long does each actually take? Is the train worth it for the views, or should I just take an express bus? How do I book train tickets in advance?

This is one of the most common questions for first-time visitors and the answer depends on what you prioritise.
Train (Colombo Fort to Kandy):
- Duration: 2.5-3 hours on the Intercity Express, or 3-4 hours on a slow train
- Scenery: the line climbs into the central hills - genuinely beautiful, especially the last hour through tea country
- Comfort: Intercity Express has reserved 2nd and 3rd class; air-conditioned 1st class also available
- Cost: 3rd class reserved about LKR 200, 2nd class reserved about LKR 350, 1st class AC about LKR 750
- Booking: buy in advance at Colombo Fort station or via the Sri Lanka Railways online portal (opens 10 days before travel and books out quickly for popular times)
- Frequency: 6-8 departures per day; the 6:55am and 7:00am Intercity expresses are the most reliable
Bus (Pettah bus stand to Kandy):
- Duration: 2.5-3.5 hours, but traffic through Colombo can add 30-60 minutes
- Scenery: the A1 highway is fine but less spectacular than the train
- Comfort: CTB public buses cost LKR 180 but are crowded; private air-conditioned buses (LKR 250-350) are more comfortable and leave from near Bastian Mawatha bus stand
- Frequency: very frequent, buses leave every 15-20 minutes
My honest recommendation:
- Take the train if you have flexibility, want the experience, and can book a reserved seat in advance
- Take the express bus if you need to leave immediately with no booking or if you want to avoid the uncertainty
The train through the hill country is genuinely special and I always recommend it over the bus for first-time visitors. Just book your seat the moment the 10-day window opens.
Ruwan's comparison is accurate. One practical tip: if you arrive in Colombo on an international flight and want to head straight to Kandy the same day, the Kandy bus from Bandaranaike Airport via Kurunegala takes about 3-3.5 hours and avoids navigating Colombo city entirely. Not scenic, but very convenient for same-day connections.
