I'm planning to travel from Colombo to Jaffna overnight to save a hotel night. Are night buses in Sri Lanka actually safe? How comfortable are they? Are there air-conditioned sleeper options? What should I watch out for as a solo traveller? Is this common for tourists or mostly just locals?

Night buses in Sri Lanka are a practical option for some routes but you need realistic expectations. Let me give you the honest picture for the Colombo to Jaffna route specifically.

Safety: Sri Lanka has a generally safe road environment by regional standards. Theft on overnight buses is the main risk - keep your valuables in a bag under your feet or in your lap, not in overhead racks. Violent incidents are very rare. As a solo traveller, the risk level is manageable but not negligible.

Comfort: this is where expectations need adjusting. There are no sleeper coaches in Sri Lanka. Air-conditioned "luxury" coaches exist on the Colombo-Jaffna route (about 8-9 hours) and they have reclining seats, working air conditioning, and usually a toilet. These are significantly better than the CTB public buses. Price for a luxury coach: around LKR 800-1,200. Worth it.

What to book: look for the private operators on the Colombo-Jaffna route - companies like Jaffna-based private services that depart from Pettah bus stand or Central Station area in Colombo. Your hotel or guesthouse can help book this for a small fee. Buses usually depart between 7pm and 9pm and arrive in Jaffna around 5-6am.

Tips for the journey:
- Bring a travel pillow - the seats recline but not dramatically
- Dress in layers, AC can be very cold
- Bring your own snacks and water; stops are brief and unpredictable
- Charge your devices before boarding, power outlets are not reliable
- Store your bag with valuables between your feet on the floor

Alternative: the Jaffna train has recently been restored and runs overnight. The train is more comfortable than the bus for sleeping and the security is better - worth checking availability first.

Saman's advice is accurate. One thing I would add: the overnight train to Jaffna (Colombo Fort to Jaffna, departing around 7pm, arriving around 6am) has been significantly improved since the northern railway was fully restored. The 2nd class reserved sleeper berths are modest but you can actually lie down. I would recommend the train over the bus for this specific route if seats are available. Book at Colombo Fort station up to 10 days in advance.
