Galle to Colombo - Southern Expressway vs scenic coastal road - which should I take and why?
I need to get from Galle back to Colombo and I have a choice: the Southern Expressway which is fast but reportedly boring, or the old coastal road through Hikkaduwa and Beruwala which is scenic but very slow. I have a late afternoon flight from BIA so timing matters. Is the coastal road actually beautiful enough to justify adding 2-3 hours to the journey? Or am I romanticising it and the expressway is fine? Are there specific stops on the coastal road that make it genuinely worth choosing?

I live in Galle and I make this journey regularly, so I can give you the practical answer and not just the romantic one.
The honest comparison:
Southern Expressway (E01): Galle to Colombo in 1.5-2 hours (depending on traffic near Colombo). Tolls around LKR 600-700 for a private car or tuk-tuk alternative (expressway requires a car or bus - tuk-tuks cannot use it). Efficient, air-conditioned bus services run this route frequently. Scenery: none. You see concrete barriers and scrub. It serves a purpose.
Coastal road (A2 via Hikkaduwa, Ambalangoda, Beruwala, Aluthgama): 3.5-4.5 hours minimum, up to 5-6 hours if you stop or hit Colombo traffic. The road itself varies - some sections near Hikkaduwa are genuinely beautiful: the road runs right next to the ocean with waves breaking close to the tarmac. Other sections through Beruwala and Aluthgama are congested market towns.
Specific stops that make the coastal road worthwhile:
- Hikkaduwa (30km from Galle): walk the main beach road for 20 minutes, good for a fish lunch at a beachside spot. The coral reef area is visible from the beach.
- Ambalangoda (50km from Galle): famous for traditional mask carving and the Mask Museum. If you have not seen this, it is genuinely interesting and takes 45 minutes.
- Aluthgama/Bentota area: the Bentota River estuary is beautiful. Brief stop for the view.
My practical recommendation for your situation (late afternoon flight): take the expressway. The coastal road from Galle adds real risk to your airport timing because congestion near Colombo is unpredictable. Missing a flight is not worth 2 hours of scenery you could experience on a different day. Do the coastal road on a dedicated morning journey going south from Colombo, not when you have a flight deadline.
Dilini's advice is exactly right about the airport timing risk. I will add one more consideration: if you want the coastal experience, the train from Galle to Colombo along the coast is actually a better option than driving it. The Coastal Line (Matara-Colombo) runs right next to the ocean for long stretches near Hikkaduwa, the views from the seaward window are extraordinary, and you avoid the traffic and parking completely. The journey takes 2.5-3 hours in an express service. Book a seat in advance at Galle station. This solves your timing problem while giving you the coastal scenery.
